The recipe is really quite simple. Each slice of white sandwich bread gets flattened with a rolling pin to create the “dough.” It’s then spread with a sweetened cream cheese filling, and rolled up into tiny “snail” spirals. The end result is almost like a pastry, crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, with a creamy layer in the middle. A brush of butter and a generous sprinkle of cinnamon sugar give every bite that irresistible crunch.

These little rolls bake up in just over 15 minutes and the aroma alone is enough to get everyone in the kitchen to see what you’re making. Whether you serve them as a weekend breakfast treat, an after-school snack, or a pick-me-up with a cup of coffee, Sugar Snails are proof that simple ingredients can make something truly special.

  • 1 loaf white sandwich bread, sliced
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese, room temperature
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar, divided
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut crusts off bread slices and discard or save for another use.
  3. Use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread.
  4. In a medium-sized bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth, then add egg, and ¼ cup sugar. Mix until fully combined.
  5. Spread cream cheese mixture onto flattened bread, roll up the slice, then cut in half or in thirds. Place rolls seam side down in the prepared baking dish.
  6. Generously brush rolls with the melted butter.
  7. In a small bowl, combine remaining sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over rolls.
  8. Bake for for 15-18 minutes or until golden in color. Serve warm.
