Air Fryer Steak
I discovered several tricks for making the best air fryer steaks by trial and error. Although I used leaner sirloin here, you may use this with any steak you prefer. It is advisable to ensure that the steaks have a minimum thickness of one inch. Thinner steaks don’t have enough time to brown since they cook too quickly. Applying a small amount of oil to the steaks improves their browning. Leaner steaks, like this sirloin or chops, benefit from a dry rub to enhance the overall color.
Tips and Variations for Perfect Steak in the Air Fryer
- Type of Steak: For this dish, I chose a leaner sirloin, but you may use this technique with whatever thick steak you choose.
- Start with steaks that are at least one inch thick since thickness matters. Thinner steaks don’t have enough time to brown since they cook too quickly.
- Room Temperature: For optimal results, let your steaks come to room temperature thirty minutes before cooking.
- Dry Steaks: Use paper towels to pat dry steaks and pork chops to eliminate moisture, which will cause them to streak rather than brown.
- Improved Browning: If you lightly mist your steaks, chops, and veggies with oil, they will brown more evenly.
- slimmer Steaks: Applying a dry rub to slimmer steaks improves their color overall. I used basic ingredients for this recipe: paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Don’t Stuff the Basket Too Full: For best browning, there should be adequate ventilation around the steaks.
- Rest: To prevent the steaks from continuing to cook in the air fryer basket, remove the steaks and place them on a dish. Tent them loosely with foil.
How much time does it take to air fry steaks?
- Medium Steak: Preheat an air fryer to 350 degrees. Cook 1-inch-thick steaks to medium-rare by cooking them for 12 minutes, then flipping them after 6 minutes.
- Medium-Rare Steaks: Preheat an air fryer to 350 degrees. Cook 1-inch-thick steaks for 10 minutes, flipping them after five.
- Adapt Duration based on Thickness: The cooking time should be adjusted for steaks that are thinner or thicker.
At what temperature is steak air-fried?
Since the temperature of the meat may rise while it rests, use a meat probe to test your steaks and remove them five degrees before you would want them done.
- Uncommon: 125°F
- 135°F is the medium-rare temperature.
- 145°F for Medium; 155°F for Medium Well
- Yes, 160°F.
Important: Because the steak will warm up as it rests, remove it five degrees before the recommended time.
Adjust the cooking time by adding or removing slices if your steak is thicker or thinner than 1 inch. For instance, in 4 minutes, a ¾-inch thick ribeye that I air-fried was medium-rare. It happens quickly!
Fun fact: A medium-rare steak is the limit for many French bistros.
They firmly believe that serving steaks medium or over is not appropriate nor representative of the flavor they want their food to have.
Take advice from their experience. Don’t overcook your steak; instead, check your meat early!
Storage Tips
- To Keep. Keep any leftover steak in the fridge for up to two days in an airtight container.
- To Warm Up. Reheat leftovers in a pan or on a baking sheet at 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a pinch, it may also be quickly warmed in the microwave.
- In order to Freeze. (While freezing steak is not the best option.) For up to three months, freeze steak in an airtight freezer-safe storage container. Thaw in the fridge for a full night before reheating.
